Q: Do I have to try out for the Girls’ Swim and Dive Team?
A: No. It is a no-cut sport.
Q: How many girls are on the team?
A: Last year’s team included 65 girls and this year we are expecting around 75.
Q: How much swim experience is needed?
A: You should be proficient in the four competitive swim strokes; freestyle, backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke. Experience on your middle school, summer league or a club swim team also helps.
Q: Do I have to be a year-round swimmer?
A: No, but many girls on the team do swim on club teams in the off season.
Q: When does practice begin for the 2011 season?
A: The first day of practice is Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011.
Q: How often does the team practice?
A: The swimmers will be practicing from 18-20 hours a week.
Q: How long is the season?
A: It runs from August 10, through November 7, 2011. Swimmer and divers qualifying for the state meet continue through November 21, 2011.
Q: When are the meets?
A: The duel meets occur weekly throughout the fall, usually on Tuesday and Thursday nights beginning at 6:30 p.m. There are also several weekend invitational meets in which the team participates.
Q: Who are the coaches?
A: Head swim coach Brian McNeff is returning for his fifth year after leading the team to a fifth place finish in the state meet in the 2007 season. The head diving coach is Dayna Azzopardi. The assistant coaches are Rich Bennetts (who also is head coach of the NHS boys' swim and dive team) and Ashley Long.
Q: Who are the captains?
A: This year's captains are Leah Erlandson, Sarah Garrity, Sarah Jane Jones, Shannon Lohman, and Susan Morris.
Q: How do the girls get to know each other?
A: All of our activities (including fund-raising) are used to help bond the team members (and parents). The spring and fall car washes are the first opportunity for freshmen to meet and interact with the rest of the team. Friendships start at this point and get nurtured throughout the swim season, into the rest of the school year, and beyond. Other team bonding events include a team-family picnic to kick off the season, numerous fire-up breakfasts and dinners, a team sleepover and the end-of-the-season banquet.
Q: What are the team fund-raisers?
A: The primary fund-raisers are two car washes (one in the spring and one in the fall). Informational flyers will come home with swimmers at the beginning of the season. They will also be posted on the web site.
Q: Does everyone have to participate in the fund-raisers?
A: Yes. Each swimmer and diver is expected to work at least one three-hour shift at each car wash.
Q: Why do we raise money?
A: The funds are used to supplement all activities that are planned for the year. The major consumer of funds is the year-end banquet (facility, food, decorations, gifts, and the list goes on) where the team members attend at no additional cost. Funds also support the Black and Orange meet, sleepovers, fire-ups, picnics, assistant coach fees, etc.
Q: How can parents get involved with the team?
A: We are always looking for volunteers. At swim meets, parents usually announce the events, provide backup timing for the events, manage the computer system, manage the post meet refreshments and snack table, and the list goes on. At our fund-raising events and any time that we interact as a group, we will provide sign-up sheets for the needed volunteer positions and any donations of food or other items that are needed. Parent volunteer sign-up sheets will be posted at the pre-season Team-Family Picnic and at the Black and Orange Meet before school starts.
